Actor Richard E. Grant reveals his late alcoholic father once tried to shoot him when he was 15: ‘ Monster’

Actor Richard E. Grant has recalled a terrifying incident from his childhood in which his late father tried to shoot him.

Grant, 67, who was born in Southern Africa and is known for films including Saltburn and Jackie, said his father was an alcoholic while chatting to Davina McCall on her Begin Again podcast.

He said he once tried to get rid of his father’s alcohol supply when he was 15 by pouring it down the sink, but his father told him he would “blow his brains out”.

“He tried to shoot me when I was 15 when I emptied all his scotch supply down the sink,” Grant said on the podcast.

The actor said he tried to get rid of the alcohol in a bid to stop his late father from drinking even for just a week.

”I was half way through [emptying out] the eleventh bottle, gun at the back of my head, I ducked, went off, ran to the garden – he finally found me, said ‘I’m going to blow your brains out’.”

“I said, go on do it, get it over and done with… I was so angry at this point.”

Richard continued, saying his father missed.

“He pulled the trigger, but because he was drunk, it wavered, [flying noise] so it went straight past. I fell to the ground and then ran away… I was too frightened to go back home.”

He stayed with his piano teacher for two weeks after, he said.

He added that his parents had split after he once caught his late mother sleeping with his dad’s best friend, but he still “preferred” to have lived with his father.

“Even though he became an alcoholic after my mother left, the person I knew and loved by day, outweighed the monster he turned into when he’d down a bottle of Johnnie Walker.”

In July last year, Grant revealed his mother had died at the age of 93.

In a video shared on X at the time, he said: “Complicated gratitude to my mother, who died this morning at the age of 93, for giving me the Gift of Life.”

“We had an incredibly complicated relationship and she was somebody that was, for me anyway, emotionally withdrawn and withheld her approbation or approval of anything,” he said.
