There’s no doubt that everyone remembers – well perhaps mostly millennials – the very first time they watched the hit film, American Pie.
The raunchy coming-of-age comedy, released in 1999, is filled with a lot of laughs – and perhaps it’s fair to say a lot of awkward moments – as the film’s teenage male characters try their hardest to lose their virginity.
But no one has more of an awkward story about watching the film for one of the first times than the show’s star, Thomas Ian Nicholas, who portrayed one of the lead characters, Kevin.

Speaking to 9honey Celebrity as he prepares to travel to Australia to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of the iconic film, Nicholas, 44, said he once watched the film at the premiere while sitting next to his mother.
He said he saw a version of the film at co-star Tara Reid’s place with Jason Biggs and Eddie Kaye Thomas. Reid played Kevin’s girlfriend.
”I’ve seen the movie a few times and noting sort of tops… the first time I saw it was a copy on VHS at Tara Reid’s place with Jason and Eddy and second time I saw it was at the premiere sitting next to my mum,” he says.
While his character didn’t have to do the infamous pie scene, there were still some awkward moments.

“I still had some moments which weren’t like, sitting next to mum sort of material!” he says with a laugh.
The actor and musician is coming to Australia with Movie Nerds for special anniversary screenings in Sydney and Melbourne on January 31 and February 7.
He has a special connection to Australia, with his grandmother being born in Fremantle and family still here. He is also set to play some gigs with his band while Down Under.
The star admits he can’t believe it’s been more than two decades since the original film came out, which has since became a franchise, and that the fan base is still as strong as ever.
“I never would of guessed at the time that we would make four films and it would become a billion dollar franchise and that it would still have a current love, but I’m embracing that full force,” he says.
“I love meeting people that enjoy my work… The thing that has been yelled at me the most is Tara Reid!” he says about his character’s on screen girlfriend and his co-star in the film.

He also speaks about the persistent rumours of American Pie 5, which would no doubt be a hit with fans.
“There’s been rumours about it for a long time, the closest we got to it was in 2021,” he says.
All the nostalgic reunions from 90s Con
He says he ran into head honchos from Universal, who said they were negotiating for the installments, but says that fell through.
But on a positive note, he says: “The studio knows this is what people want, so I think it’s possible for things to come back around.”

“Look at all the sequels coming around like Happy Gilmore, Malcom in the Middle, 90s nostalgia is big and it’s not going anywhere, so I think we have to wait for the next round of the studio to say they’re ready.”
He also tells 9honey Celebrity about his close bond and friendship with his co-stars, and says they all have a “special connection”.
He also reflects on working with stars Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge on the films.
“I didn’t really have with many scenes with them, but I mainly got to spend time with them when we were doing the promotions and press junkets,” he says.
“Both of them are sweethearts and especially Jennifer, she had zingers… she’s hysterical and Eugene is awesome.”
“During American Wedding filming I would go and play golf with him. It’s all just a cast of good people,” he adds.
