Bungie Keeps Hiring Despite
On August 7, 2024, news broke that Bungie is still hiring even after letting go of many workers last month. This news surprised many in the gaming world.
Bungie, the company behind popular games like Destiny, fired 220 people on July 31, about 17% of its workforce. Some teams were completely shut down.
The layoffs happened just weeks after Bungie released The Final Shape. This new part of Destiny 2 was very successful. Many fans loved it.
Along with the fired workers, 12% of Bungie staff learned their jobs would change. They will now work more closely with Sony, the big company that owns Bungie. Bungie’s boss, Pete Parsons, says this will help stop more people from losing their jobs.
Despite all these changes, Bungie still has job openings on its website. It’s looking for four new workers. Two of the jobs are for a new game called Marathon, one is for Destiny 2, and the last is for marketing.
Some people think it’s strange that Bungie is hiring after firing so many workers. However, it’s normal for companies to need new people, even when cutting jobs.
This isn’t the first time Bungie has fired workers recently. They also let people go last October. Many game companies have been firing workers in the past couple of years. Some say it’s because they hired too many people during COVID-19. Others blame the economy or bad choices by company bosses.
Parsons said Bungie tried to do too much too fast, getting too big and spending too much money. He also said Destiny 2: Lightfall didn’t do as well as they hoped. All these things, plus problems in the wider economy, led to Bungie losing money.
Some Bungie workers think the company could have avoided firing so many people. They’re upset about how the bosses handled things.
Even though many are sad about losing their jobs, some former Bungie workers still love the games they helped make. One person who used to test games for Bungie said she’s excited about the next Destiny 2 raid. She plans to play it when it comes out.
This situation shows how quickly things can change in the video game world. Companies like Bungie must balance making great games with keeping their business healthy. Sometimes, that means making tough choices that affect many people’s lives.
