Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher: Inside Her Marriage to the Hockey Star

Country music superstar Carrie Underwood knows a thing or two about love songs, and when looking at her marriage to former NHL superstar Mike Fisher, she’s got plenty of inspiration for a whole lot more! The American Idol-winner first met her hunky hubby back in 2008, and since then, they’ve grown their family by welcoming two sons. Though the early days of their relationship consisted of long distance and making things work from afar while Mike was playing hockey in Ottawa, Canada, and Carrie was jet-setting to and fro for her booming career, things worked out just fine, and the two have been enjoying a lovely life together ever since.

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher’s early relationship

Carrie and Mike were first connected through her bass player—and it was Mike’s persistence that finally led him to her backstage at one of her concerts. However, after their initial introduction, the early days of their flirtationship took place largely over the phone, with their first date happening about three months later—on New Year’s Eve, nonetheless. “It was New Year’s Eve and there was a team party—and I actually invited myself to the team party. He moved slow. He moved very slow,” she joked on The Howard Stern Show.

The two shared their first kiss after the ball dropped and the rest is history. While a relationship in the public eye plus the pressures of their demanding careers in the early days together could have caused things to come tumbling down, Underwood revealed to Glamour back in 2012 that things just worked between the two of them. “He knew what to expect,” she shared. “In Canada he was a big celebrity, so he knows what it’s like living under a microscope. And he travels a lot, which is good for both of us. We’re both independent people, so we can’t have somebody around 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

Do Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher have kids?

Carrie and her husband Mike have two sons, Isaiah and Jacob. Back in 2016, before Jacob joined their crew, Carrie gushed about motherhood in an interview with Redbook. “I definitely feel like it’s changed me as a person. I’m happier. I’m in a better mood a lot of the time. He’ll be watching cartoons and I’ll be watching him. I’m completely in love. I love it when he’s sleepy and I get to hold him and smell him. He doesn’t know I’m staring at him and being all googly-eyed!”

Carrie and Mike know what it takes for a healthy marriage

While no relationship is perfect, it seems as though Carrie and Mike’s is one that’s built on trust and respect for one another. “We learn from each other and we have spirited discussions about things that we disagree on, but at the end of the day, we love each other very much,” Carrie said on I Am Second.

Another thing the couple has gotten comfortable with is saying sorry. “The key, what I’m learning, even inside of being a dad, is I got to get comfortable saying sorry,” Fisher told Christian Huff on The 4:8 Men Podcast. “That’s really important, to apologize, ask for forgiveness. That’s something that Carrie and I have gotten a lot better at. We weren’t great at it for a while, and you just gotta get really comfortable saying sorry and owning it.”
