Coronation Street star Shelley King quits after 11 years

Coronation Street actor Shelley King has quit the cobbles after 11 years.

According to The Sun, the soap star, best known for playing Yasmeen Metcalfe, filmed her final scenes in Weatherfield in December, with her exit scenes set to air sometime in March.

While King is yet to publicly address her exit, a TV insider told the publication that her decision to leave was down to the actor wanting to “explore other projects”.

“Shelley spoke to producers early last year and advised that after 10 years on the show and being involved in many major storylines during the past decade she had decided the time has come for her to explore other opportunities,” says a soap insider.

King joined the soap back in 2014 as Yasmeen alongside husband Sharif Nazir (Marc Anwar) but their 45-year marriage ended not long after, when Yasmeen discovered Sharif’s affair with her friend Sonia Rahman.

She then went on to date local radio DJ Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew), with the two marrying in Las Vegas. After the nuptials, the relationship turned abusive with Geoff proving to be emotionally and physically controlling.

In 2020, in a dramatic climax to the storyline, Yasmeen was held at knifepoint by Geoff and ended up retaliating and stabbing Geoff in the neck, leaving him to bleed. She was arrested and charged for manslaughter but later found not guilty.

Geoff eventually died after falling off the roof of the couple’s house in another showdown with Yasmeen.

King’s exit follows amid several over Coronation Street departures, including Charlotte Jordan, Colson Smith and long-standing cast member Sue Cleaver.

Actor Luca Toolan also made his last appearance as Mason Radcliffe last week, who died after being stabbed by his brothers Matty and Logan. The pair discovered he’d helped the police to gather evidence linking them to the death of DS Lisa Swain’s wife Becky.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
