David Tennant reveals he was born with a rare medical condition leaving him with 11 toes in total after fan speculation

David Tenant has confirmed that he was born with a rare condition after avid Doctor Who fans on Reddit pointed out that the Scottish actor may have an extra appendage.

In a new interview with Metro, the Rivals star confirmed that he does indeed have 11 toes in total, with a six toes on his right foot.

When Tennant was asked by the publication if “people know” about his extra appendage, the actor simply responded, “Well, they do now.”

But it’s not exactly a full extra toe, according to Tennant it’s “sort of like a nubbin”.

According to Sydney Podiatry, the condition is called polydactylism, and while it is rare it’s not entirely uncommon, affecting approximately one in every 1000 babies.

Babies sometimes are simply born with “an extra two or two” usually only on one foot – as in Tennant’s case – but sometimes, both are affected.

Tennant is set to host the upcoming BAFTA Awards on February 16 (February 17 in Australia), telling Metro that it is both a “huge privilege” and “very giddy-making”.

“But I’ve sort of got a bit of a free pass, because nobody expects me to be any good at it,” he joked.

“It was a slightly mad thing to be asked to do, not something I ever aspired to or imagined would come my way.”

The most memorable award show moments of all time

“When you’re standing on that stage looking out at all the most famous people in the world, you just think: How did I end up doing this?”

But it’s not the first time the Doctor Who star has taken on the gig, hosting the 2024 BAFTAs as well.

Ahead of the awards ceremony last year, Tennant told Variety that he’d taken some notes of what not to do after Jo Koy bombed on the Golden Globes stage.

“Not being a comic I feel gives me slight cover. I’m not really expected to be good at any of that stuff. I’m just there to hold it all together,” he told the publication.

“And don’t diss Tay Tay, I think is the lesson to be learned. I live in a house of Taylor Swift fans, so I know better.”

And while his plan was to steer clear of the controversial jokes, Tennant did say that his plan would be to steer the evening toward the “dazzling and exciting and giddy-making” side of an awards ceremony rather than making things “dull and rather repetitive”.

One thing that has remained the same for Tennant throughout his two years as host is his plan to be unbiased toward his favourite movies, telling both Variety last year and Metro this year that he plans to “remain entirely neutral”.

“I made a decision very early on that as the host, I had to remain entirely neutral and not pass comment on any of the films. I’m not talking about any of this,” he said when asked by Variety if he had watched all of the films nominated in 2024.

“I’m removing myself from it. I don’t want it to look like there’s any sort of favoritism going on.

“So that’s has been my policy, which I’m going to continue very vigilantly until after the awards show. And then I will post all my opinions about who was robbed.”
