In a highly anticipated return to the Australian film scene, actor David Wenham and director Jonathan Teplitzky have teamed up once again to bring back the iconic character of Johnny Spitieri in the sequel to the 2003 classic Gettin’ Square.

Wenham, who originally portrayed the “mulleted junkie” in the original film, shared his thoughts on why he decided to reprise the beloved role.

“You get to see these characters from 22 years ago, and you see that we haven’t changed all that much,” he continued.

“It was great to not only make what we hope is a really good film and hand that over to the audience now, but also just to work with all these people both in front and behind the camera.”

Wenham also spoke about the emotional depth of the sequel, which he believes sets it apart from the original.

Teplitzky, who directed both the original film and the sequel, praised Wenham’s performance and his ability to transform into the character.

“It was amazing,” Teplitzky said.

“We always wanted to make this film, you know, something we didn’t want to make was Gettin’ Square 2. We wanted to make a new film. And the juxtaposition of the emotional, dramatic elements within the film, I think, only enriches the comedy.”
