First for Women: What are some of your favorite Lunar New Year traditions, and how do you plan to celebrate this year?
Dorothy Wang: On Lunar New Year, the most important thing is to be with your family and your loved ones, although some little superstitions go along with it. My family wasn’t super superstitious, but they had a big underlying thing: you’re not supposed to lose your temper or get angry, because that sets the tone for the rest of the year. There are a lot of other fun superstitions and traditions that include not taking out the trash or not cutting your hair because if you cut your hair, then you cut all the luck away.
When I was growing up, I usually went to dinners with my family, but since I’m older now, I have taken on the tradition of hosting Chinese dinners for my friends. This year, we’re going to dinner in Chinatown in Manhattan, and I’m going to bring little red envelopes, decorate the table and bring little fortune cookies with customized fortunes for everyone.

FFW: When it comes to any sort of Lunar New Year get-together, what do you have to have with you, and what do you prefer to wear?
DW: Technically, you’re not supposed to wear black, but being a New York City Girl now, I was, like, “Oh my god, what am I gonna wear?” I recently got a red snakeskin bag, which perhaps is a little on the nose for this, but I might wear that.
It’s nice to wear bright colors, and each zodiac sign has different colors. I believe the lucky colors are yellow, green and gold; red is always a lucky color in the zodiac as well.
FFW: What food or drink do you most enjoy on this special day?
DW: There’s a list of things you should eat for certain reasons. You should eat dumplings because they signify wealth and look like a little bag of gold. Egg Rolls symbolize gold bars, so you’re also supposed to eat those. Noodles always symbolize longevity. Fish is to increase prosperity and abundance. If you eat pork, it helps you gain a rich and prosperous life. And shrimp represents liveliness and happiness. Oranges and tangerines, since they’re round, signify roundness and wholeness and are symbols of luck.
Some years it’s like a scavenger hunt trying to get all these foods in.
FFW: Let’s talk about the new Lunar New Year bottle of Don Julio Tequila. What made you want to promote it?
DW: The Lunar New Year Don Julio bottle is the 1942 edition we all know and love, but with a revamped design. This is the Year of the Snake, so they redesigned their bottle with the Aztec feathered serpent head mixed with the Chinese zodiac snake body.
It really is a beautiful blend of two cultures coming together for this bottle. It’s their first time doing a Lunar New Year Edition bottle, so I was very happy and proud to hear that they’re including my culture in something this wonderful and beautiful.
FFW: What do you hope the Year of the Snake has in store for you, and what are you planning on doing to make the most of it?
DW: The Year of the Snake is a year of transformation, shedding old layers and using your wisdom from before to create new layers and a new life.
This year, I want to try to push myself into different arenas and do different things and not feel like I have to be stuck just because I’ve always done something or have always been friends with someone who may not be the best person for me. I really want to grow, do different things, try different things, and not be scared of being stuck in the same place. So I think that that’s very symbolic.
