Eric Roberts
Actor Eric Roberts has publicly apologized to his sister, Julia Roberts, for his past remarks that he was responsible for her rise to fame. In his new memoir, Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far, the 68-year-old actor took accountability for the “asinine” comments he made in the past, where he claimed, “If it weren’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts.”
In the memoir, Eric recanted his earlier statements and expressed regret. “That’s not only unfortunate, but it’s also untrue. And I hope Julie will accept this more public apology,” he wrote, adding that his sister, now 56, was always “very driven” and destined for greatness on her own. “Someone would have plucked her out of the crowd in New York without my help,” he admitted.
While acknowledging Julia’s talent, Eric also mentioned that he had a role in introducing her to New York and the acting scene, but he no longer takes credit for her success. The two siblings were estranged for years but have since mended their relationship. However, Eric shared that they maintain some distance regarding public discussions about their personal lives. In a 2018 interview, Eric mentioned that he and Julia are “email buddies” and have spent a few Thanksgiving together.
Eric, who is also the father of actress Emma Roberts, reflected on his career, admitting his struggles with addiction had strained his family relationships, including losing custody of Emma. Despite past conflicts, the Roberts family continues to focus on healing.
