Grammys 2025: Liam Payne is honoured in In Memoriam segment

The Grammys have paid tribute to the late Liam Payne, who died last year aged 31.

The One Direction star, who fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Argentina on October 31, was featured in the In Memoriam segment of the award show. 

Fans were heartbroken to see a video of the singer with his bandmates, saying in a voiceover, “We never expected any of this to happen. We have done some amazing things.”

Accompanying the clips narrated by the late singer was a poignant performance by Coldplay singer Chris Martin, who sang All My Love.

A photo of Payne flashed on the screen, reading: “Liam Payne, singer-songwriter, One Direction.”

The In Memoriam segments also included touching tributes to Quincy Jones, Marianne Faithfull, Tito Jackson, Eric Carmen, Cissie Houston and Rich Homie Quan. 

Payne’s unexpected death last year sent shockwaves through the world, with countless One Direction fans mourning the singer, along with those close to him.

In a statement following his death, Payne’s bandmates paid tribute to him.

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” the statement obtained by the BBC began.

“In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.

“The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us.

“We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”

The group, consisting of Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zaynall, paid their respects to Payne by attending his funeral, which was held on November 20th in the UK.

Cheryl, who previously had a relationship with the late singer, and Simon Cowell attended the funeral.

Throughout his short years, Payne lived an extraordinary life.

Born in Wolverhampton, a city near Birmingham in the UK, he went on to find worldwide fame in One Direction.

The late star auditioned twice for The X Factor UK before hitting the big time, once in 2008 and again in 2010. But his latter audition at the age of 16 changed his life forever.

The panel that year included music mogul Simon Cowell, Natalie Imbruglia and Cheryl, who would be his future partner.

Payne went on to tour the world with One Direction before taking on a successful solo career.

The late star is survived by his 7-year-old son, Bear Grey Payne, his parents, Geoff and Karen Payne, and his older sisters, Ruth and Nicola.
