Jimmy Barnes health update: Cold Chisel star shares tribute to wife Jane Barnes as he returns home from hospital following his hip replacement

Jimmy Barnes’ hip replacement was a success – and now the Scottish-Australian rock icon is finally back home from hospital and recovering with his supportive wife Jane right by his side.

Barnes, 68, who has faced a bit of a health battle in recent years and had open heart surgery in December 2023, shared a tribute to his wife of more than 40 years and a picture of themselves at home together as he rests.

Sharing a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, he thanked Jane for being with him and by his side “the entire time”. It was just two weeks ago when he confirmed he was going under to “have his hip replaced with a permanent joint”.

“I can’t tell you how great it is to be home, to sleep in my own bed,” he began.

“Thank you to the medical teams at St Vincent’s and St Luke’s hospitals who have got me back on my own two feet.”

With a special mention to Jane, whom he married in May 1981, he wrote: “My @jane13barnes who’s been by my side the entire time.”

Legends of the music world, then and now

Just two days ago, Barnes shared a picture of himself in a hydrotherapy pool doing physiotherapy, saying it was “doing him good”.

Jane has kept fans up-to-date on Barnes following his operation, which is considered major surgery, saying, “Jimmy says thank you for all the well wishes”.

She also made sure to make him some home-cooked and healthy meals to help his recovery while in hospital.

In 2023, the Cold Chisel rocker had a bacterial infection and required open heart surgery.

At the time, a bacterial infection he’d been battling for two weeks spread to his heart.

“It’s infected an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced some years ago due to a congenital defect, so I’ll be getting open-heart surgery over the next few hours to clear out this infection and put in a clean valve,” he shared in a statement at the time.

“…As always I’d be lost without her,” he said about Jane at the time.

Before that, he battled bacterial pneumonia – a condition that sees the air sacs in the lungs fill with fluid.

It was also reported at the time that the rocker had emergency back and hip surgery before the heart operation.

Born in Glasgow and moving to Australia as a kid, he left his home aged 17 to join Cold Chisel – and the rest is history.

“Everything that happened to me as a child was the perfect breeding ground for a rock’n’roll singer,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2017, when his memoir Working Class Boy won a biography award at the Australian Book Industry Awards.

“It toughened me up. I was on edge, I was needy, I needed people to like me ’cause it made me feel safe… and that gave me confidence.”
