Jimmy Kimmel
Jimmy Kimmel recently revealed why he declined the offer to host the 2025 Academy Awards. During a discussion on the “Politickin’” podcast, Kimmel shared insights into the challenges of juggling his late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, with the demanding role of hosting the Oscars.
Kimmel, who previously hosted the Oscars in 2017, 2018, 2023, and 2024, was invited to return for the 97th Academy Awards scheduled for March 2, 2025. However, he turned down the opportunity. In his conversation with California Governor Gavin Newsom, former NFL player Marshawn Lynch, and NFL agent Doug Hendrickson, Kimmel explained that the extensive preparation required for the Oscars significantly impacts his ability to focus on his nightly talk show.
“It’s a challenging role that requires a lot of dedication,” Kimmel explained. “When my attention is on the Oscars, it inevitably takes away from the energy I can give to Jimmy Kimmel Live. This year, I made the decision that it was too much to handle.”
Kimmel’s choice underscores the high stakes and pressure of hosting the Oscars. He acknowledged that he struggles to balance the intense focus required for the Oscars with his responsibilities on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “I’m completely immersed when it comes to something as big as the Oscars,” he admitted. “I think about it constantly, and it can make my regular show feel like a distraction.”
He also highlighted that his team of writers, who assist with both his late-night show and the Oscars, find it difficult to manage both projects simultaneously. While he finds hosting the Oscars fulfilling when everything goes well, the stress and workload of doing it for three consecutive years made it too overwhelming.
As the Oscars draw closer, the search for a new host continues. Reports suggest that comedian John Mulaney also declined the opportunity. Kimmel noted that while many individuals would excel at the role, the commitment it requires is daunting. “It’s often said that hosting the Oscars is a thankless task,” Kimmel remarked, “but I wouldn’t go that far. When it works out, it’s incredibly rewarding, but it’s not an easy gig.”
As the 97th Academy Awards approaches, fans and industry insiders alike are left wondering who will take on the prestigious role of host. One thing is certain—Jimmy Kimmel has chosen to focus on his nightly show, leaving the Oscars hosting duties to someone else in 2025.
