Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift’s six year relationship feels like a lifetime ago. So much has happened since their breakup in April 2023… we’ve all learned too much about Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Moo Deng entered our lives, there was Scandoval and Barbenheimer, JoJo Siwa did more than any human ever should, and Taylor’s new boyfriend Travis Kelce won the Super Bowl. What a ride. While Taylor put details of her breakup with Joe into the Tortured Poets Department, Joe has stayed pretty tight-lipped about the details of their breakup from his POV. Now, he’s giving a rare statement to the press. Let’s break down what Joe Alwyn had to say about his breakup with Taylor Swift.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Joe was kind of sort of asked about his relationship with Taylor and the near decade that they dated. Writer Tim Lewis clearly did the best he could getting anything out of Joe regarding his A-list, super-public relationship. Suggesting that he asked Joe if he feared “that his relationship with Swift would overshadow his career?,” to which Joe responded: “I have tried just to focus on controlling what I can control. And, right from the beginning, tried to focus on the things that are meaningful for me: friends, family, work, of course. So noise outside of that, I think I’ve done what lots of people who find themselves in the public eye do, which is just try and ignore it. If you don’t, and if you let all of that other stuff in, and if it starts to affect you and your behavior, you’re living from the outside in. And then you’re pretty fucked.”
Joe goes on to explain how he stayed grounded: “I have great family and friends and real things in my life; those are the things that kept me tethered to the ground. So I don’t know how else to say it, it’s… just in a different room.”
And for the big finale… Joe essentially says he’s moved on, particularly when it comes to talking about the topic. “That’s something for other people to do. We’re talking about something that’s a while ago now in my life. So that’s for other people. That’s what I feel.”
And that’s that on that, folks. I’m not sure we can expect much more of that from Mr. Alwyn, so we’ll take what we can for now and wait for a new album.
