Over the Thanksgiving weekend, most of the news was about President Joe Biden releasing his son Hunter from prison, even though he had said many times that he wouldn’t. Hunter was about to be sentenced for federal gun violations and tax charges. Jon Stewart had thoughts, of course.
“Hey, man, the Democrats used this case to show why people should trust our system,” the host of The Daily Show says in the above monologue. “And it’s hard. Democrats have to defend our institutions and systems as flawed but still valuable, while Republicans just want to blow this stuff up.” The Democrats keep making a purity test for a system they can’t seem to pass, though, and they keep getting caught.
Stewart then gives a few quick examples of this, such as Biden having secret documents in his garage after criticizing Trump for doing the same thing and Biden fist-bumping Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after criticizing him for killing journalist Jamal Kashoggi.
“Rules, loopholes, and norms — the difference between the systems Democrats say they are revering and the one that they’re using when they need to is why people think it’s rigged,” he says. “Use the rules, find the holes, and break the rules, but do it in a way that helps people too.” Some people who are not related to you as well.”
