Kylan & Izzy Darnell’s Christmas Haul Controvery Breakdown

For some of us, ’tis the season to be jolly while for others it’s a fun time to act a fa lalala la lalala fool. The Darnell sisters (who are basically always viral on TikTok for their OTT lifestyle) have apparently decided to proceed with the latter this holiday season. Who are Kylan and Izzy Darnell, you may ask, if you are not an accomplished scholar of frivolous internet lore such as myself? Kylan is a 21-year-old college student and beauty pageant regular who attends the University Of Alabama. Izzy is a make-up-loving high schooler who still lives in their small Ohio hometown. Together Kylan, Izzy, and their family of six are known for their catchphrase “have a great day not a good day” and a suspicious track record of outrageous incidents (like when Izzy ruined Kylan’s dress by falling into a pool a mere HOUR and a half before prom pictures). Long story short? This family loves shiny things and messy drama and Christmas 2024 was no different. Stop scrolling: here’s a breakdown of why Kylan and Izzy’s Christmas haul caused so much drama.

What happened with Kylan and Izzy’s Christmas haul?

It all started on Christmas Eve when Kylan oh so innocently asked her followers “So do you guys want a Christmas Haul? Or are we not doing that this year?” Kylan was hesitant because she’d already had “enough drama…that any more would actually make [her] crash out.” Lol, welp, that was either some freaky foreshadowing or a well-laid plan falling into place because naturally, the comments begged to see what gifts the Bama Rush baller had gotten from her mother, Tonya, and father that year.

The haul started off fairly tame with cute pieces from Zara, Alo, and Free People. But as Kylan continued casually showing her fave items, her TikTok audience found the haul way too good to be true. I mean, Chanel tennis shoes, Chanel kitten heels, a Chanel straw Raffia bag, a jumbo Chanel Caviar flap bag, a Lady Dior D-Joy handbag, two Van Cleef necklaces, and a Chanel double chain waist bag would seem excessive for a celebrity child, like Blue Ivy, let alone a civilian, considering the total easily pushes $20K per child, even if every item was bought second hand.

But where fans really felt the Darnell sisters lost the plot was when they presented Izzy’s allegedly brand new pink Kelly Birkin bag. It’s not just that a Birkin is expensive (they cost anywhere between around $30K to $2ooK depending on the size and style). It’s that they’re incredibly rare. Again, the creme de la creme of the A-list has trouble sourcing these items because of elite waitlists that you can’t skip just because you’re popular on TikTok.

Were Kylan and Izzy’s presents real or dupes?

In the original hauls, the way Kylan and Izzy were drooling in absolute shock and awe gave viewers the impression they were flexing legit items. Kylan’s low-key smug sign-off “so yeah, that’s my Christmas” gave many the impression that she and her sister wanted the world to believe their holiday was far superior to the average. Unfortunately for the ladies, TikTok always comes with the receipts.

Many fashion experts were able to clock that some of the purses and shoes did not appear to be legitimate designer from their flaws — meaning they were alleged to not even be bought secondhand, but rather were counterfeit pieces (the kind allegedly sold on unmonitored marketplaces like DHGate or on Canal Street).

Instead of owning that they may have been trying to pass off their spoils as 100% real, Kylan and Izzy both got defensive. Izzy told “insane” people they needed to focus on the real meaning of Christmas AKA being grateful and honoring Jesus. Bold point for someone who posted all their presents to show off in the first place (instead of spending that time with their family or IDK, praying), but okay, girl.

Kylan shared her own rant about how she thought viewers would be “smarter than this” to know that “everyone buys real and fake.” She never explicitly said she got five authentic Chanel items, sooooo, I guess that’s everyone else’s fault for taking her excitement at face value? Both sisters even blamed the internet for attempting to bully them out of liking their parents’ efforts (when critics were actually focused on the girls’ promotion of unattainable wealth especially when it turned out the wealth presented wasn’t totally honest). According to Kylan, “Miss Tonya, [her] mom, said it’s not DH Gate where she gets the fake stuff, it’s actually The RealReal” because Tonya has a membership there.

The RealReal’s Response To The Darnell Family’s “Fake” Claims

The RealReal prides itself on being “The Largest & Most Trusted Source For Authenticated Luxury Consignment.” Though there has been a fair amount of criticism of their customer service in recent years, most expert shoppers know the company to be a reliable source for vintage collectors, not a free-for-all where “fakes” are sold all willy-nilly. Naturally, the company didn’t take kindly to being blatantly associated with selling counterfeit goods.

They replied to a TikTok comment explaining that they’d reached out to the Darnells for clarification.  Then on December 29, the company made a lengthy ad explaining their authentification process — featuring a yellow Mini Kelly Birkin as the star (the same bag Izzy claimed to receive on Christmas). The video said this particular bag is “high risk” for being counterfeit because “there’s a lot of posers out there.” The comments applauded The RealReal for making marketing magic out of the sloppy Southern mess.

What’s the problem with buying fake designer?

Kylan and Izzy have since posted another Christmas haul boasting that every single item is real, if still bought second-hand from a company called FWRD. The heavy-handed bragging has been praised by some as the ultimate clapback, while others found the tripling down on the importance of excess to be gross and desperate.

The truth is everyone does not buy “real and fake.” There are horrifying ethical concerns with buying counterfeit designer items (which are different from TikTok’s beloved dupes). Counterfeit items are intentionally manufactured to deceitfully mimic a designer’s exact product, not only stealing their patented IP but also doing so in unmonitored factories with unknown working conditions and sustainability practices. If you’re even slightly worried about the alleged sweatshops affiliated with fast fashion, just imagine what producers with no one to answer to (because they’re operating illegally behind closed doors) are doing to save a buck. The better option? Source your bags from local, affordable boutiques and sellers that provide luxury quality even if it’s not Gucci Gucci, Louis Louis, Fendi Fendi, or Prada.
