LA wildfires: Joshua Jackson opens up for first time about losing home of 25 years

Joshua Jackson has opened up for the first time about losing his home in the Los Angeles wildfires in January.

The Topanga Canyon home was burned down in the Palisades fire, which reduced more than 5000 homes to rubble.

The Canadian-born actor told Jimmy Fallon the house was his childhood home and where he’d lived on and off for 25 years, making the loss a bit harder to swallow.

“The story just gets worse the more I tell it,” the Dawson’s Creek alum admitted.

“It is the place that I lived for, on and off, for the last 25 years and was for the last four and a half year – or four and three quarters as she likes to tell me now – has been the place where my daughter and I, and when my wife and I were still together, where we lived. So not great.”

The star injected some humour into the story as well during his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote his new TV series Doctor Odyssey.

“It’s an interesting thing to wake up one morning and all you own is a grungy sweat suit and a pair of shoes – I should have worn nicer clothes to work that day, that was my big mistake,” Jackson joked.

The actor recalled seeing his home after it was razed and feeling like there was a silver lining to it all for his daughter Juno, whom he shares with ex-wife Jodie Turner-Smith.

“When I went to go see it, I’m standing in front of this thing, and it’s still literally smoking, and I’m looking at it, I’m like, ‘this bears no relation to my home. This is just a pile of stuff had burned in a fire’.

“And in some ways, I’m actually excited for the opportunity – you know that house has given me so much over the years and I have loved it, and it has loved me, and it has everything, the heartbreak, the baby, just life, all of life is in there.

Celebrities who have lost their homes in LA’s fires

“Every floorboard is a piece of my story – but I’m excited to build a new house that doesn’t have all of daddy’s history in it, that is for her and I.

“So when she grows up, every floorboard has her story in it.

“It’s not how I would have chosen to do a remodel, but in some ways, I’m actually excited about the process.”

During the height of the wildfire crisis in LA, when several blazes were burning, Jackson only confirmed his house was among those burned down in a short statement and hadn’t spoken about it publicly since.

Jackson lived in that home until he was eight, when his parents split and he moved back to Vancouver with his mum and siblings.

He later bought back his childhood home in 2001, from the man who bought it from his parents, with his future family in mind.
