For former Love Island contestant Shaughna Phillips, Mother’s Day weekend took an unexpectedly stressful turn. The reality TV personality had to rush her 14-month-old daughter Lucia to urgent care after a concerning injury.
Shaughna shared the ordeal with her Instagram followers, posting a photo of herself cradling a sleeping Lucia after their hospital visit. “A little trip up Urgent Care today,” she captioned the tender snapshot.
The Injury and Infection Fears
The devoted mom went on to explain that she became alarmed after Lucia suffered a cut on her finger a few days prior. Fearing it had become infected, Shaughna didn’t take any chances.
“She’s absolutely fine but hurt her finger the other day and I thought it had become infected,” Shaughna wrote. She included a photo showing Lucia’s swollen, inflamed finger surrounded by a sad face emoji, adding, “Her lil finger hurts my heart.”
While the situation was undoubtedly scary for any parent, Shaughna was relieved to get the all-clear from medical staff. “She was such a little angel for the nurse and got the all clear for infection (yay),” the Love Island legend shared.
Mother’s Protective Instincts
Like many first-time moms, Shaughna admitted the desire to keep her precious daughter wrapped in protective gear at all times. “I just want to wrap her in bubble wrap with a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, shin pads, gum shield and goalkeeper gloves. Is that too much to ask?” she joked.
As Lucia recovered from her injury, snuggled up to her doting mom, Shaughna expressed her gratitude for the moment. “She’s not fell asleep on me forever and I’m loving every second.”
Shaughna’s Journey to Motherhood
Shaughna’s protective motherly love for Lucia is even more poignant given her own journey to parenthood. The former Love Island star welcomed her daughter in April 2022 with her ex-boyfriend Billy Webb, who is currently serving a 9-year prison sentence.
Despite the circumstances, Shaughna has been committed to ensuring Lucia has a relationship with her father. “It’s not a decision I made lightly…but I just felt like I owed it to her,” Shaughna explained about bringing Lucia to visit Webb in prison.
She continued, “Although it’s the last place on earth I’d hope to take a baby, I was never going to stand in the way of him being a dad.”
Overcoming Grief and Embracing Time
Shaughna’s resilience as a mother is remarkable, especially having lost her own father to cancer at just 22 years old. The reality star has been open about the grief she experienced but maintains a powerful perspective on cherishing every moment.
“My dad was denied time, and that was the thing he would have loved to have the most, but he didn’t get it. So what an absolute travesty if I wasted my time – the one thing no-one is guaranteed to have – just being sad,” Shaughna expressed.
She added that her late father “would absolutely shake me if he thought I was just being miserable because he isn’t here.”
