Iconic singer Marianne Faithfullhas died aged 78.
A statement confirming the death of the music legend, who was best known for her single As Tears Go By, was shared with the BBC.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull,” it began.BBC.

“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family. She will be dearly missed.”
Faithfull was born in Hampstead, London, in December 1946.
At 17, she was discovered at a London party by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham and her career took off a year later with the release As Tears Go By – written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
Faithfull was also a star on the screen appearing in films such as I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname (1967), The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968) and Hamlet (1969).
She married John Dunbar shortly after welcoming their son Nicholas in 1965. However, it wasn’t long before she had moved on with Jagger.

The couple split in 1970, around the same time Faithfull stepped away from the spotlight due to a damaged voice and struggles with substance abuse.
She returned nine years later, releasing her album Broken English.
Soon after she moved to New York City where she continued to struggle with substance abuse, ultimately checking into rehab.

In her later years, Faithfull continued to create art, releasing a spoken word album titled She Walks in Beauty in 2021.
Over the years, the singer experienced many health battles, including a hepatitis C and breast cancer diagnosis.
In 2021, she opened up to Vogue about her younger years in the world of rock and roll and what she would change if she could turn back time.
“Being very young and silly, I was drawn to everything that was as decadent as possible. I am [74] and I’m paying for all that,” she told the publication.

“I really wish I had never had a cigarette, particularly, or any drug or alcohol in my life. I didn’t know when I was in my [20s]…what it would do to me.
“I always thought I would die young, I never expected to get to this age.”
Faithfull’s cause of death is unknown at the time of publishing.
