Seven words and mere hours was all the notice Mumford & Sons gave for Sydney fans to have the chance to see them live – and free of charge.
The British folk rock band are in Australia for an exclusive one-night-only show at Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall, with a majority of the tickets to tonight’s sold-out concert being reserved for the band’s community fan club.
That meant when lead singer Marcus Mumford shared a video to social media on Sunday evening informing fans the band would be performing a surprise gig that very night, they dropped everything and went.

“Sydney. The Bavarian, York Street. 5pm. Bye,” Mumford, 38, says in the 12-second-long video, which was shared around three hours before he would take the stage at the surprise event.
The short notice was no issue for die-hard fans of the band, which is known for hits Little Lion Man and I Will Wait.
So many fans swamped the venue, in fact, that at 5.20pm – 20 minutes past the show’s supposed start time – people were still queuing up in a long line down the street outside with the hope they’d still get in.

Fans who were lucky enough to get let inside, meanwhile, were not disappointed, with the band standing on a small stage in the centre of the room, up close and personal in a way you’d not get at another venue.
Those who were unable to attend the gig, however, were gutted, with many taking to the band’s social media pages begging for another chance to see them.
”Ohhh just 1 more gig in Sydney pleeease ? 🙏,” one person asked.

Another commented, “One in Melbourne!?”
Fans also asked them to come to Perth, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast.
Mumford & Sons are next scheduled to perform at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium concert hall on March 20.
