Netflix’s ‘Forever’ Season 2: Release Date, Cast, Plot

Romance fans know, the only thing better than a happily ever after is an ending that leaves you wanting more. By the end of Forever season 1 on Netflix, it’s clear the the central romance isn’t going to last, well, forever. Based on the 1975 novel by Judy Blume (yes, the icon Judy), Forever tells the story of Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr.), and their life-changing first romance. Yeah, the show is based on a 50-year-old book, but it gets a major update thanks to a 2018 Los Angeles setting and a Black-led cast. It’s swoony and dreamy and oh-so romantic. But, the ending kinda leaves audiences hanging.

Spoilers for season 1 of Forever follow!

At the end of Forever season 1, Keisha is heading off to her dream school Howard University, and Justin is pursuing his passion for music, so they break up and go their separate ways. Yeah, Keisha and Justin might not have a forever love, but can you blame a girl from wanting to see at least a little more of their story? When they say their goodbyes, Justin says, “Maybe we’ll be ready for each other in 10 years,” so maybe there’s room to see them reunite down the road? Here’s what we know about the possibility of a season 2 of Forever on Netflix.

Judy Blume only wrote one Forever book, and unfortunately it looks like there’s only one season of Forever on Netflix – at least for now. The TV series made a lot of changes from the book (I mean, they had to in order to give it the contemporary setting), so I don’t see why they couldn’t make a big change and expand the story.

The book ends the same say Forever season 1 does, with the main couple breaking up. But a possible season 2 could follow Keisha and Justin in their separate lives until they have the reunion Justin hints at. Even the series creator and showrunner, Mara Brock Akil, is interested in seeing more of these characters. “Howard [University] is Keisha’s first boyfriend, let’s just be honest,” she told the Netflix blog Tudum. “Justin’s really the second. I want to see her with her man. I want to see who she is in this environment.”

Since Forever season 2 hasn’t been announced yet, we don’t have a release date for it. But, if it were to happen, we would likely see a lot of the season 1 cast return. In addition to Lovie Simone as Keisha and Michael Cooper Jr. as Justin, the cast includes Xosha Roquemore, Karen Pittman, Wood Harris, Marvin Lawrence Winans III, Barry Shabaka Henley, Niles Fitch, and Ali Gallo.
