‘Silo’ Season 2, episode 3: Who is Solo?

Sarah Ferguson as Juliette Nichols has already had a rough ride in the first three episodes of Season 2 of Silo. The bad news? There is deadly air and dead bodies all around her in an abandoned, waterlogged silo that is far away from her friends and family. There is also the constant fear of death. The good news? She has a new friend!

But who is Solo (Steve Zahn), who seems to be the only person who made it out of Silo 17 alive? Why is he the only one who is still alive? Why does he want to stay hidden in the vault so badly?

What do we know so far? Let’s go over episode 3 again.

So who is Solo?

Jules meets Solo at the end of episode 1 and learns more about him in episode 3. Not surprisingly, the news he has for her is not what she wants to hear.

“Hi, my name is Solo.” “Just Solo, since I’m by myself in here,” he says. So I’m by myself. No one made them leave either. They made the choice to go. It was a nice day when they did. Everyone was happy. After that, the dust began to blow again. The evil may have gone away for a while, but it came back in a big way. That’s when all of them died.”

Soleil then tells Juliette a story about Ron Tucker, a man who wanted to go outside but refused to clean. Instead, he wrote “Lies” on the camera lens and walked around the corner, disappearing.

“Two days later they painted on the screen — ‘Lies’, right over what he had written,” Solo says. “That’s when the fighting began.” Russell put me in this room. Russell was in charge of IT, and I worked for him. He also told me that I should never, ever let anyone into the vault. “Ever.”

Is Solo saying the truth?

So far, Solo’s story seems like it could be true. We already know Silo 17 is empty because we saw the bodies outside of it. It makes sense that his story is about rebels who go outside and die. Solo being the Head of IT’s shadow would also make sense, since the vault can only be opened by the Head of IT and their shadow.

But there are also holes. Julia asks Solo about the bodies outside the vault that “aren’t as old as the other ones,” but Solo won’t say anything. When he talks about the day everyone went outside, he looks away from Juliette just before he says, “It was a nice day.” He also avoids some of her other questions. It looks like he’s not telling her everything.

Then there’s the matter of those bodies outside the vault. The words “WE WILL GET IN SOONER OR LATER” are scratched across the opening that faces Solo’s viewing slit near the end of the show. This suggests that someone has tried to get into the vault before. Why didn’t Solo want to help them? And why does he act so badly when Juliette asks him about what happened in Silo 17 if he’s telling her the truth? It looks like there’s more going on here…
