The late former President of the Cambridge Union, Sir John Nott, was known posthumously for many things, including his infamous interview with Robin Day in 1982.

The duo conversed during the Conservative Party conference when Nott was the Secretary of State for Defence.

It was a tense time, with Nott attempting to resign from Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher after Argentina invaded the Falklands.

Day spent most of the interview with Nott criticising his work and recent budget cuts from the first sealord, Admiral Henry Leach.

Nott replied, “You’d hardly expect the first sea lord to say anything else, would you?”

Day then suggested to the Secretary that he was a “transient.. here today, and if I may say so, gone tomorrow, politician.”
