TLC’s Polyfamily Trailer Breakdown: TV’s First Quad Relationship

Polyfamily is a new series on TLC. Two married couples and their collective children star in this series, taking us deep into polyamory and non-traditional family structures via a closed quad family unit (for now). While this family appears to have things figured out, the Polyfamily trailer teases otherwise. When matters of the heart are at stake, complications are never far away, no matter what.

The couples are Alysia Rodgers and Tyler Rodgers, followed by Sean Hartless and his wife, Taya Hartless. The men, Tyler and Sean, are non-romantic partners. The same narrative rings true with their wives, Alysia and Taya.

However, Tyler is dating Taya, who is married to Sean. Likewise, Sean spends every other night with Alysia, who is married to Tyler. Between these marriages, four children are growing up underneath the same roof. And, as the Polyfamily trailer shows, another baby is now on the way, bringing these polyamorous partakers up to a party of nine.

But what else does the trailer tease? And what storylines can we expect to see in this new series on TLC? We will tell you everything we know now.

TLC’s Polyfamily trailer promises plenty of drama

TLC just dropped the Polyfamily trailer, and, whew, it is mesmerizing and messy. As Sean explains in the trailer, their relationship consists of “a closed quad” of four people. Within this quad, the couples are “only dating within ourselves and married within ourselves,” Sean adds, noting that there are zero “outside partners” in this relationship.

“Like everybody else, right?” Tyler hysterically interjects. “We never set out to live our lives like this, but we realized we could love more than one person and make our own rules as to what we want our family to look like,” adds Alysia.

The trailer then takes a turn, revealing that Taya is pregnant. However, the father is unknown (by choice because jealousy is a messy beast). “Since the guys switch rooms every night, we don’t know who the fathers of the younger boys are,” Taya explains, quipping, “I can assure you, it is one of two people!”

A text from Sean appears. As his words state, a blood test has come back, and now, they begrudgingly know who the father is. The music heightens when a producer sets the men down, where they state that, were it not for this relationship, Sean and Tyler would not even be friends. Clips then flash by, showing these men arguing.

Likewise, Tyler and Taya appear to be falling in love, and this narrative breaks the heart of Tyler’s wife, Alysia. However, Taya is falling for someone outside of their quad. If she pushes for this connection to evolve into something more, then the future of this polyamorous family might be in jeopardy.

If the Polyfamily trailer is any indication, this series will be a highly watchable hot mess.

TLC Polyfamily cast explained

A cast can make or break a series. If the characters are likable, the fans will follow. On the contrary, if the personalities are petty and prickly, our screens will (most likely) turn off. So, let us take a deeper look at who these four characters are to help us predict which way the pendulum might swing before the debut of Polyfamily lands on TLC.

To recap, Alysia and Tyler are married. So are Sean and Taya. As for the outside party that Taya appears to be entertaining, no name has leaked (yet). However, these four soon-to-be stars moved into a new house together in February 2020, and, as we doubt there is an extra bedroom (or patience) for a fifth partner, this fifth character may or may not appear on TLC.

According to the press release TLC dropped, Alysia and Tyler have been married for 11 years. Before this couple joined the quad, they had two school-age children. After they joined this quad, Alysia welcomed baby number three into the mix. The father of their third child is unknown.

Similarly, Sean and Taya have been married for six years. Taya welcomed her first child into the world after she joined the quad. She is pregnant with her second child during Season 1 of Polyfamily. The father of both her children is unknown.

The Polyfamily trailer proved that drama will quickly arise in this new series. As stated in the press release, TLC’s Polyfamily is “a fascinating, vulnerable, and unpredictable look at love, loyalty, and the complexities of modern family life.” The words “vulnerable” and “unpredictable” are where the drama will enter, both with the identities of the youngest children’s fathers and with the admission of Taya, who has forged a connection with an outside party.

Online, the children and their parents look happy. But as we all know, appearances and realities often differ. Taya spoke about their troubled realities on Instagram, which they will likely detail once Polyfamily debuts on TLC. If not, we will cover her gist, which reveals that their coming out saw them losing many loved ones as their connections failed to understand the bonds they created.

Additionally, these four stars share different parenting styles. So, we can expect to see tense moments when this series debuts. These partners also need to be “intentional about their non-romantic relationships,” which is tricky as jealousy lingers for various members of this family.

Nevertheless, Tyler stressed in an interview with Today that they are “just like any other monogamous family,” but with four people instead of two. Consider us seated for the debut of Polyfamily on TLC this April 29.

Polyfamily will be streaming on TLC.
