Tony Romo’s arrest occurred around 6:18 p.m., when deputies stopped him traveling southbound on Interstate 43 near the elevated bridge. According to the arrest custody report cited by the local outlet fox 6He performed poorly in field sobriety tests. He was booked into the Milwaukee County Jail before his release a few hours later.
The report does not say whether he took a breath test or not. Wisconsin treats this type of case differently than most states. A first-offense OWI is not a crime there, but a civil infraction that typically carries a $150 to $300 fine rather than jail time.
The state also uses “OWI” where others say DUI, so any Tony Romo DUI coverage refers to the same charges, and his September 21 hearing is ahead. Romo went home to Wisconsin to golf. The Burlington native played in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship in West Bend that week and tied for 73rd.
Neither Romo nor CBS commented. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to follow-up questions from some outlets about the stop.
Romo signed with Dallas undrafted in 2003 and became the starter in 2006. He retired after the 2016 season and moved straight into the CBS booth as the network’s top analyst, where he has called games ever since.
