At mid-afternoon and day four of London Fashion Week’s Spring 2027 season, the British Fashion Council’s schedule allowed us the anticipated debut of Christopher Kane as Mulberry creative director. Appointed in March, the graduate of Scottish Central Saint Martins strikes a balance between his sensibility and the British leather goods house’s rich heritage. On the runway, leather outerwear was adorned with cutouts inspired by the iconic Mulberry Bayswater handbag. The classic carryall, top-handle and shoulder bag reimagined. Oversized long-sleeve T-shirts and shimmering iridescent minidresses rounded out the collection. The collection looks beyond the leather accessories that have defined the brand, and brings ready-to-wear back into focus.

“For me, the best looks by far were the ones that referenced Mulberry’s British heritage elements – check prints, knitwear etc – but updated them in new and interesting ways. The looks that were too edgy felt like a square peg in a round hole. Not necessarily bad, just out of place. Overall it was a little too avant garde and clinical for me – I’d love more colour, more texture and more depth next time.” (national salt)
“Oh, I don’t really mind it. It’s certainly a strange start, especially for Mulberry, but she’s got a touch of a creative novel which is quite visible here with the paneling and fastenings. However, for a spring collection it looks quite pathetic. The color is the biggest issue. Very inconsistent.” (Squizzry)
