Wendi McLendon-Covey said she and others associated with Goldberg remember Jeff Garlin’s controversial exit “very differently”.
An Instagram clip of Jeff Garlin’s interview on The Daily Beast’s “Obsessed” podcast was shared on Monday. Garlin discussed his controversial exit from The Goldbergs, saying that his mental health condition had not yet been diagnosed at the time.
However, McLendon-Covey offered a different perspective in the comments under the Instagram post.
She first wrote, “Huh,” before adding, “Let’s just say I remember things very differently, like the crew, other cast, writers, and our executives.”
During the interview, Garlin said, “I really sympathize with (McLendon-Covey), because at the time, I was bipolar. I was unhappy with the show, and I was unhappy with my performance, too.”
She said that McLendon-Covey was always supportive, but her health issues affected their relationship. He added, “And she was always trying to tell me, ‘Hey, you’re really good on the show.’ I didn’t believe him. I just got to the point where I had to step down, and she was very angry.
Garlin explained that being bipolar affected his behavior. He said, “Having bipolar, I was either one of three things: dark, dark, dark, dark, didn’t talk and didn’t see anyone; happy to the point of hysteria, never stopped talking; or mean – really, really mean.”
He was not diagnosed until he was 59, adding, “It’s toward the end of my time with ‘The Goldbergs’.” So I can be many things. So when I left, she was very upset and angry at me.
