senator mitch mcconnell Broke his week-long silence with a clear message to the President donald trumpAddressing key concerns on foreign policy and upcoming legislative priorities. The Kentucky Republican wrote a Wall Street Journal op-ed challenging Trump’s handling of Russia and Ukraine.
Why did the Kentucky Republican criticize Trump’s approach to Putin?
Senator Mitch McConnell published a scathing op-ed wall street journal On Sunday, Russia criticized President Donald Trump’s tactics toward Vladimir Putin.
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican argued that putting pressure on Ukraine rather than confronting Russia would not achieve peace. He wrote that Trump’s approach “demonstrates that he misunderstands facts that American voters well understand.”
McConnell has long supported Ukraine and opposed Putin. In the op-ed, he called Putin an enemy of America who is allied with China, Iran and North Korea. He also targeted Trump’s diplomatic envoys without directly naming Steve Witkoff.
The senator urged Trump to seek guidance from the American people instead of relying on business allies. He wrote that the president should “focus on the intelligence of the American people, not on naive businessmen who think diplomacy means flattering adversaries.”
McConnell too caution That passing “a wasteful legislative agenda” will require cooperation with Republicans who understand the geopolitical stakes.
However, the op-ed raised questions about its authorship. McConnell has not appeared in public since late September and has not commented on camera since his death on June 14. He returned to the Senate in a wheelchair in mid-September and cast his final vote on September 30.
During his brief return, he avoided questions from reporters and was surrounded by aides, including Chief of Staff Terry Carmack.
McConnell’s office did not respond to questions about his recovery or recent activities. Their communications team includes several senior consultants who earn more than $210,000 annually. Senior advisor Dylan Vorbach served as his chief speechwriter.
Despite his absence, some GOP senators have insisted McConnell will remain sharp even behind closed doors. His colleague, Senator Thom Tillis, claimed that McConnell raised immediate concerns about Ukraine during a recent conversation.
