For those wondering, Mescal plays playwright William Shakespeare in the emotional tear-jerker film directed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao. Interestingly, Hamnett earned eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Jessie Buckley.
Mescal’s co-star Jessie Buckley talked about her Oscar humiliation and expressed her sadness to The Hollywood Reporter. She shared, “I know what we’ve created together is very special to us, and I hold it very dear to my heart, and no part of Agnes exists without Paul. No part of what I created in this story or what we created exists without Paul and what he put into this story. So what’s recognized is hers as much as she’s recognized in her own category.”
Furthermore, Dwayne Johnson, who played the lead role in the biographical sports drama film The Smashing Machine on former amateur wrestler and MMA fighter Mark Kerr, also failed to earn an Oscar nod. Other nominees for Best Actor include Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).
The Smashing Machine disappointingly only received one nomination at this year’s awards, which was for Best Makeup and Hairstyling (via after wrestling).
