President Donald Trump paid tribute to the Rev. Jesse Jackson following his death at the age of 84, calling the civil rights leader “a force of nature like few others before him.”
in a post on true socialThe president said he had known Jackson for several years before he became president and had provided support to the Rainbow Push Coalition, an organization founded by Jackson. “He was a good man, with lots of personality, patience and ‘street smarts,'” Mr Trump wrote. “He was a very friendly person – someone who really loved people!”
Trump addressed the criticism against him in the post. He wrote, “Despite the fact that I have been unfairly and consistently called a racist by the scoundrels and lunatics of the radical left, the Democrats, it was always a pleasure for me to help Jesse.” He cited criminal justice reform, increased funding for historically black colleges and universities, and the “opportunity zone” created through the 2017 tax reform law as policies he said Jackson supported.
“Jesse was a force of nature like few others before him,” Trump said. He added that Jackson “loved his family very much, and I send them my deepest condolences and sympathies. Jesse will be greatly missed!” Trump also posted many old pictures of the two together.
Their relationship is decades old. The photos show the two at a boxing match in Atlantic City and a campaign event in New York in 1988. In 1997, Mr. Trump announced that he would donate office space at 40 Wall Street to the Rainbow Push coalition’s Wall Street Project. In 1998, Jackson characterized Mr. Trump as “the shyest, the most withdrawn, and the most self-destructive.” A year later, Jackson said, “One can remember his seriousness and his commitment, because his success defies logic.”
Jackson’s family said he died peacefully Tuesday morning. He said he was hospitalized in November to rule out a neurodegenerative condition, which doctors diagnosed last year.
