Mel Schilling dies at the age of 54
Following Mel’s passing, her husband posted an emotional statement on his Instagram account. “Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today surrounded by love,” he began. And then, she remembered the strength Mel had shown during her declining health.
“In his last moments, when I thought the cancer had taken away his ability to speak, he called me close and whispered a message to Maddy and me that will support me for the rest of my life. It took all his remaining strength, and that gesture expressed our wee Melsie perfectly. Yet, his only thought was for Maddy and me,” Gareth wrote, apparently omitting what his wife had said.
As Gareth recalled, “This is a woman who, at the age of 42, became a new mother and a TV star – and managed both. This is a woman who, after two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming. For most of you, she was Mel Schilling – of MAFS Matriarch and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our little sister Melsie: an incredible mother, role model, and soulmate.”
Gareth ended his post with a bitter reminder that “Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel. But ultimately, life is fleeting, fragile, and tomorrow is not promised to anyone. If you can do anything to honor Mel, please live life to the fullest, love your people well, and try not to obsess over the little things.”
