DOJ announces major charges in alleged UFC White House attack plot

On June 16, the DOJ issued charges against five suspects for attempting to attack the White House on Sunday to harm government officials and other attendees of the UFC Freedom 250 event.

official press release A release issued by the US Justice Department revealed that the FBI was investigating a group of five conspirators who allegedly acquired several weapons to carry out their small attack. Thus, the FBI made several arrests in areas of Ohio, Missouri, Nebraska and California over the weekend.

“The FBI, our law enforcement partners, and our U.S. attorneys did what they do every day to make America safer through rapid response and vigilance in investigating, disrupting, and destroying this alleged scheme before it could be carried out,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch said in the statement. “We will take immediate and aggressive action to identify and prosecute those who incite and plan violence.”

The release also noted that the alleged attackers planned to carry out a “mass casualty incident” during the UFC Freedom event at the White House. The group reportedly planned to deploy drones equipped with explosives to force an evacuation. Snipers deployed by the accused persons may have begun firing on “high-value targets” trying to flee the White House complex.

“Protecting the President of the United States and the grounds of the White House is a priority for the U.S. Secret Service,” said Secret Service Director Sean M. Curran. “The landscape has changed, and as a result, we have seen a dramatic increase in threats against our protected people. I am proud of the men and women of the Secret Service who vigorously monitor, investigate, and arrest those who plot to interfere with our protective mission.”

Notably, the UFC Freedom 250 event took place on June 14 on the White House South Lawn in celebration of President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and the upcoming 250th U.S. Independence Day.
