The musician remembered wearing leather shorts with zippers in the front and back, which he immediately regretted given his condition. He added, “I thought, ‘This is the worst thing that could happen to my situation right now.'”

Goulding learned of the disease during an arduous tour in South America, where she accompanied Lorde. A shared meal before the festival reportedly led to the episode. “I remember having dinner with Ella and I had some kind of wrap and it all went wrong,” he said.

The singer also reflected on how her life suddenly changed at the beginning of her career and how unprepared her body was for it. She went from obscurity to major global moments almost overnight. “I went from never flying, never getting photographed, to singing at a royal wedding,” she said. “I don’t think my body knew how to process the contradiction between my old life and my new life.”

At the time, the industry offered little protection to artists under the relentless program, Golding said. “I never stopped,” she admitted, noting recurring ailments like tonsillitis and the out-of-touch voice. She also recalled that after turning down an awards show due to health reasons, she was warned that she would never be able to perform again.

While Goulding acknowledged that support systems for artists have improved, she has not forgotten how harsh things once were. “There were things like: ‘If you don’t do this, you’ll get consequences,'” she said. Now, as the singer gets ready for her next musical era, teasing her November single “Destiny,” Goulding says she’s finally learned how to listen to her body.
