J. Cole opens up about Kendrick Lamar’s apology in new freestyle
J. Cole addressed his past apology to Kendrick Lamar in a new “Birthday Blizzard 26” freestyle. He raps in the surprisingly dropped track, “I was on top, look, the apology took me out of the top 3, no problem, I’m probably my best when they doubt me. The top ain’t really what I thought, so I jumped off and got back down and started again at a level where I wasn’t valued as much, just to cross them again and tell them all to stay.”
Specifically, Cole’s verse referenced the “7 Minute Drill” diss track which he dedicated to Lamar. Interestingly, this was before Lamar’s highly publicized rap beef with Drake in 2024. But unlike Drake and Lamar’s intense public feud, this one was mild in nature. Cole reportedly described the “Euphoria” rapper’s music as boring and uninspired. (via Complex).
However, soon after, Cole took to the stage at his Dreamville Festival in North Carolina, where he apologized sincerely to Lamar. He then revealed that he was ‘very proud’ of his project ‘Might Delete Later’, except for one part.
“Y’all love Kendrick Lamar, right? As do I,” the 41-year-old rapper said. Cole continued, “So I just wanna come here and be like bruh in public, that was the most disgusting, stupid shit, and I say all this to say that it makes me feel like 10 years ago I was headed the wrong way, and I pray that God will bring me back to my purpose and my path. I pray that my n***a doesn’t find a way.”
The 41-year-old detailed how he felt “terrible” and sincerely begged for forgiveness. Cole said, “You do what you do. It’s all good. It’s love. And I pray that y’all will forgive a s*** for the mistake so I can get back on my true path, because I’m not going to lie to y’all, the last two days felt terrible.”
