laguna beach alum Jason Wahler She remembers the exact moment she knew her life was about to change. According to him, this happened before the first episode of the popular show was aired.
On April 28, Jason appeared on Carl Radke’s More Life podcast. During the show, Jason talked about how quickly his life changed after the first Laguna Beach commercial came out in 2004.
At the time, Jason shared, he was already privately struggling with mental health issues and a teenage identity crisis. Furthermore, he also had legal problems.
Reality TV star focused on “false sense of reality”
“Imagine everything I was experiencing at 17, 18 years old — identity crisis, going to treatment, dealing with the law, mental health issues,” Jason said. Suddenly, MTV released the commercial that made him and his friends celebrities overnight.
“The moment the commercial for Laguna Beach airs, I go to the gas station in Laguna,” he recalled. “I went over there, and it looked like Justin Bieber got out of the car. So it was just crazy, the notoriety it brought.”
Unfortunately, the excessive attention only served as a distraction from the deeper personal issues he was avoiding.
“All the stuff I wasn’t working with was completely thrown to the side,” Jason admitted. “And I was like, ‘I can concentrate it”
Although fame created a false sense of reality and alienated him from what he was going through, he leaned into it. Looking back, Jason said it was surreal how suddenly everything in his life changed, seemingly overnight.
As Laguna Beach becomes one of MTV’s most popular shows, Jason finds himself living a life he never imagined. But along with fame came the pressure to maintain the image the audience saw on screen.
When audiences expected him to be the same person they saw on TV, he decided to “play up that persona”.
“At 18, we were living the dream,” he concluded. “I mean, at least that’s what we thought was the dream… We’re literally getting paid to party and, like, travel the world.”
