According to Danan’s account, he was at his parents’ home indulging in his vaping habit when he suddenly lost his breath and collapsed. His family immediately sprang into action, calling for an ambulance and administering CPR until the police arrived and took over. Paramedics then rushed Danan to Whipps Cross Hospital in East London, where he spent a week in intensive care, battling not only respiratory failure but also pneumonia.
“I was dead — it’s a miracle I’m here,” Danan told The Sun on Sunday, recounting the harrowing ordeal. “I’m upstairs puffing away on my vape, then suddenly I lost my breath and collapsed.”

Danan’s doctors delivered a harsh reality check, warning him about the severity of his condition and the potential long-term consequences of his vaping addiction. “The doctor was so, so harsh with me,” he said. “She told me, ‘Paul, you don’t know how serious this was, and you are going to be in here for a while now, on this oxygen’. She said if I ever smoke in any form again, I risk being linked to an oxygen tank later on in life. She said that’s it now.“
The Love Island legend, who has previously been open about his struggles with addictions to drugs and smoking, acknowledged that his transition to vaping after years of cigarette smoking had pushed him over the edge. “After years of smoking cigarettes and all sorts, it’s the vaping which has done me in. That pushed me over the edge,” he admitted.

Danan’s battle with addiction dates back to his teenage years when he was introduced to cocaine on the very first day of his stint on the set of Hollyoaks at the age of 19. “The day I started there, someone, and I am not going to say who, handed me an eighth of cocaine and I didn’t really know much about coke, and he was like, ‘welcome.’ It was the first day, the first read-through, I hadn’t even filmed anything,” he revealed on the podcast “The Dozen with Liam Tuffs.”
The Love Island star, who is a father to an 8-year-old son named Deniro, has been candid about his struggles with addiction over the years. In 2019, he appeared on Jeremy Kyle’s talk show and discussed his addictive personality, saying, “I’ve got an addictive personality, and if I like something, I want more of it.”
