Jeff Bezos was afraid of Donald Trump
During a recent conversation, the veteran journalist shared his two cents on the recent Washington Post layoffs. He discussed her possible relationship with the POTUS-fearing Amazon founder.
“(Bezos) acquired the paper about a year after I got there,” Martin Baron said. Briefing with Jen PsakiHe added, “He invested. He spoke on behalf of the mission of the Post. He spoke on behalf of the mission of the press in this country.”
While Baron acknowledged that the news outlet initially “grew under ownership”, he said the recent layoffs “represent a return to form.”
Baron added, “It shows that this newspaper with a deep heritage and historically high ambitions is going to step back.” “And it’s a terrible thing that a news organization that has been so important to the history of this country is regressing the way this newspaper is doing.”
The former Boston Globe editor then detailed how the beginning of Donald Trump’s second presidential term influenced Jeff Bezos to take a different approach with The Washington Post.
“Trump is back in office,” Barron said. “He promised retribution against his perceived political enemies. Jeff Bezos was viewed by Donald Trump as a political enemy for one reason and one reason only, and that was the Washington Post’s coverage.”
According to Martin Baron, this led Bezos to fear that the Trump administration might begin targeting his other businesses if the Washington Post continued to run stories critical of the current regime.
Barron, who embraced retirement in 2021, concluded his article by saying, “This is a newspaper that has prided itself on its independence, and Jeff Bezos’s behavior has suggested to readers that he is not independent at all. He is, in fact, dependent—dependent on Donald Trump.”
