Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex and former actress, shared last night that she lost her pup, Guy, of 10 years. The beagle was a rescue dog, adopted by Meghan in 2015, who’d been on his way to a kill shelter before she swooped in.

Markle shared the news with a heartfelt message and sweet video that is sure to make you cry if you haven’t seen it yet (and even if you have already). See the post below:

The name Guy was chosen by Markle after he was adopted because, “they [adoption center] referred to him as ‘the little guy’ because he was so small and frail, so I named him ‘Guy’.” The former Suits star shared that she had her pup through every major life event. Markle had Guy while starring as Rachel Zane on Suits, when she got engaged to Prince Harry in 2017, when they married in 2018 and when she became a mother. “He was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort.”

When Markle relocated to the U.K. to be with Prince Harry, Guy made the journey with her. In their engagement interview, Markle briefly mentioned him. “Well, I have two dogs that I’ve had for quite a long time, both my rescue pups. And one is now staying with very close friends, and my other little guy is — yes, he’s in the U.K., he’s been here for a while.”

Guy had a difficult accident early on in his life with Markle

Markle went on to explain his hard life in the post. “He endured a terrible accident shortly before I moved to the UK which had him undergoing surgeries for several months and unable to leave the clinic,” she wrote. “Doctors said he would never walk again, but Dr Noel Fitzpatrick said he could do it. H and I would drive late at night, after hours, to see Guy as he recovered in Surrey for months on end.”

“I will always be grateful to Noel and his team, the team at Queen West Animal Hospital in TO, our vets now, and my friends and community: Thank you for loving him so.”

Markle addresses Guy’s presence in her new cooking show

Unfortunately, Guy’s sad passing comes just days after Markle announced her new cooking show, With Love, Meghan, which is set to release on Netflix on January 15. In the trailer for the series, fans can see Guy resting in his bed, so Markle addressed this in her goodbye message to her beloved dog.

“Because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss,” Markle wrote. “I think you may fall a little bit in love too.”

As Markle mourns her best friend, she explained that she is still trying to process Guy’s passing. “I have cried too many tears to count – the type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them or pretend they’re not there,” Markle shared. “But they are. And that’s okay too.”

She continued, “Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know ❤️‍🩹 As ever, Meghan #adoptdontshop”
