Royal expert says Nottingham outing appears to challenge king’s position on Sussex’s royal role
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were reportedly accused of disregarding King Charles’s royal status after a visit to Nottingham. On 15 October, the couple made their first joint public appearance in the UK since returning. He visited several charities and greeted well-wishers, his interactions resembling a traditional royal outing.
Royal expert Duncan Larcombe tells New Magazine (via) express) that the move could upset Prince William. It also reportedly challenged Charles’s position and his letter, in which he referred to the Sussexes as private citizens. During their visit to Nottingham, the expert said Markle and Harry enjoyed the attention they received, and the way they welcomed the crowds, in a way that private citizens would not.
“There was nothing personal about it. Charles’s position has been made absolutely clear, and the Nottingham visit was a statement of Harry and Meghan’s intention,” Larcombe said. “They were just pointing two fingers at him and saying, ‘You can’t tell us what to do. We’ll do what we want. We’ve had partnerships with these organizations in the past, and we’re not stopping just because you issued a letter.'”
The location holds deep symbolic significance for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as Nottingham was the first city the couple visited together after announcing their engagement in late 2017. Meanwhile, another report claimed that Kate Middleton also reportedly reached “breaking point” with the Sussexes’ UK appearance.
