It’s been a tough awards season for Wicked stans like myself, so it’d be really nice if there was a happy ending for this cinematic masterpiece at the Oscars (the Oz-cars, if you will). But alas, I doubt that shall be the case, based on all the previous award show results this year. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have yet to take home any Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress wins, which is utterly baffling. Plus, director Jon Chu’s been mostly ignored this awards season, aside from his Critics Choice Awards win.
Wicked got 10 Oscar nominations (not too shabby), including one for Best Picture. The musical adaptation film is tied with The Brutalist and only trailing behind Emilia Pérez, which somehow got 13 noms, despite loads of valid backlash. If you ask me, Wicked should win all 10 categories, but especially Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, and obviously the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories. It’s really time for Ariana and Cynthia to get their damn flowers. I don’t see anyone else singing, dancing, flying, and acting their asses off.
Following the Oscar nominations, Cynthia shared some reflections about the special moment on Instagram. “Moments like this don’t come along very often, and when they do, it is sacrilege to let them pass by without a moment of gratitude,” she wrote. “I am grateful to be a part of something that makes people feel seen, grateful to be a cog in the wheel of a piece that makes us believe in magic, grateful to have experienced a dream come true, and deeply deeply grateful for this unbelievable recognition.”
Ariana opened up her nom during a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “It was quite surreal,” she recalled. “It was so exciting … As soon as they started announcing that our whole Wicked family… I was just sobbing because I love our Wicked family so much. When they announced mine, I was a mess. I almost collapsed.” Yup, that’s on-brand.
I need to process my fury and depression, so let’s go through all the Oscars 2025 Wicked snubs together, shall we? Sigh. Hopefully, Wicked: For Good will sweep next year to make up for this tragedy.
Did Ariana Grande And Cynthia Erivo Win Oscars For Wicked?
I fear Ariana lost the Best Supporting Actress category to Zoe Saldaña, as expected. (Zoe’s won this category throughout the entire 2025 awards season.) Stay tuned for Cynthia’s category though…
Which Oscars Did Wicked Win?
Wicked‘s Paul Taswell made history as the first Black man to win Best Costume Design at the Oscars!! “This is absolutely astounding,” Paul said during his acceptance speech. “Thank you Academy for this very significant honor. I’m the first Black man to receive the costume design award for my work on Wicked. I’m so proud of this.”
More to come…
