Kerry Kennedy calls for protests at Kennedy Center after Donald Trump’s demolition threat

Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Skakel, shared details of the protest on Thursday, September 17. He wrote, “Hands around the Kennedy Center,” and gave the time of the event as Friday, September 18 at 6:30 pm EST. He also included the Kennedy Center’s Washington, DC, address of 2700 F Street NW. His post included a link for those who wanted to RSVP.

The protest follows images from Wednesday, September 16, when Trump returned to Maryland after North Carolina Campaign Rally. In the pictures, Trump is looking at a poster showing a plan to demolish the Kennedy Center. Federal housing official Bill Pulte stood with Trump as he examined the poster on Air Force One. Pulte later took several posters from the plane.

Trump repeated his threat to demolish the center if courts continued to block efforts to add his name to the building. “For the Trump administration, for me to get involved in this and take it on long-term and move it forward, or raise money to move it forward, I think the Trump administration should definitely be recognized,” he told reporters. Trump said that without that accreditation the center could be closed or “destroyed.”

The protest follows a federal judge’s September 15 ruling that blocked the board from putting Trump’s name back on the building. The board then voted to close the center for renovation. Kennedy’s “Hands Around the Kennedy Center” event gives supporters an opportunity to gather at the venue. This demonstration has taken place at a time when controversy continues regarding the future of the Centre.
