It appears the issues raised by his legal team in his appeal require a new trial. However, Alex will be in jail awaiting his new trial. He was sentenced to 40 years on federal charges and 27 years on state charges for various financial crimes.

People The court found the allegations from former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill disturbing, the report said. In his appeal, Alex’s lawyers claimed he may have improperly influenced jurors. The legal team claimed that Rebecca’s alleged comments regarding Alex’s testimony allegedly interfered with her Sixth Amendment rights. This right guarantees a fair and impartial trial.
However, the response of prosecutors did not lend any credibility to this allegation. The prosecution claimed there was no evidence that Rebecca’s comments were inappropriate or influenced the jury’s decision.
Meanwhile, Alex, who is from a prominent local family, was previously convicted of the murders of his wife Maggie Murdaugh and their son Paul Murdaugh. In June 2021, a mother and son were shot to death on the family’s hunting property.
While there were no witnesses to the crime, Paul sent a Snapchat video to a friend showing his father at the scene just before the murder. Furthermore, at the time of the Murdoff murders, Alex was asked to reveal his financial records. This was the result of a boating accident, which took the life of one of Paul’s friends.
In March 2023, Alex was convicted after a six-week trial. He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms. Meanwhile, Alex continues to claim his innocence in this heinous double crime.
