donald trump On Sunday used a joke about his sisters to repeat an unproven claim that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) married his brother. The president made the remarks in Salina, Kansas, while campaigning ahead of the midterm elections.
Trump told the Salina crowd that people once asked him if he dated his sister. He did not say who asked. The audience laughed as soon as he answered.
Trump said, “Years ago people asked me, ‘Is it true that you’re dating your sister?'” “I said no. … I have two beautiful sisters. One of them passed away, wonderful person, federal judge, top, top federal judge, and the other one was a beautiful sister. But I never had any interest in dating her, marrying her. … It never even crossed my mind.”
Trump went on a tangent to echo his allegation that Omar married his brother. He has not given any evidence. Authorities recently raided Omar’s home and the Justice Department is reportedly investigating his citizenship.
Omar, an American citizen of Somali origin, has served in Congress since 2019. He has called the allegations false and politically motivated. After all, the President has made similar attacks before. He repeated this claim at a rally in The Villages, Florida, where coverage described it as long debunked.
Elizabeth Trump Grau, 84, is the president’s only surviving sibling. His other sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, served as a federal judge before retiring. He died in 2023 at the age of 86. Trump also recently mocked his sisters at a rally in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Overall, the Salina incident occurred after a recent campaign stop in the state of Iowa, and Trump frequently deviated from the topic at both locations, even as he claimed he could have won the 1955 Vietnam War within a week.
