Elon Musk reportedly stays in White House despite Melania Trump’s objection
According to the book Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump, written by New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, the first lady argued against allowing the tech billionaire to spend the night at the presidential residence. However, her husband paid no attention to her objections and invited her to stay at the White House.
The Regime Change report shows that the test took place while Elon Musk was still leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). During one of his trips on Air Force One, Donald Trump asked him if he had a place to stay. Musk replied that he had not made any such arrangement, after which Trump sent him an invitation to the White House.
However, Melania Trump strongly opposed the idea and opposed letting the SpaceX founder stay in his place. POTUS overruled his wife’s opinion on the matter and allowed Musk to spend a few days at the White House (via ok magazine).
Elon Musk eventually spent several nights at the presidential residence, and made the iconic Lincoln Bedroom his own. He also informed the journalists about living in the White House in 2025.
Musk said, “Sometimes I’ll stop by the White House…the President, very, very, I think we’re good friends, and we’ll be on Air Force One or Marine One, and then he says, ‘Hey, do you want to stop by?’ And I’m like, ‘Sure.’
Elaborating further on his stay, the businessman added, “And then he gave me a tour of the Lincoln Bedroom and… oh, it’s nice.” Musk also revealed sharing late night ice cream with Donald Trump. “I mean, don’t tell RFK. He’s actually a pretty good host,” he shared.
Additionally, Elon Musk said that even though he spent some nights in the White House, he chose to sleep at friends’ places, as well as on the floor of his office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on other occasions.
