according to GuardianCouncil members raised concerns about the award during a meeting on Thursday, October 15. Some reportedly demanded that FIFA abolish the award, while others called for it to be kept free from politics. Infantino told the council that FIFA’s social responsibility committee would review the award. The committee will have to suggest a way forward before the next Council meeting to be held in Doha on 16 December.
Many members reportedly believe the award has suffered because of its association with Trump. Others fear that the prospective recipient could cause diplomatic trouble or upset the US President. FIFA’s 22-member Social Responsibility Committee includes many representatives from the countries supporting Infantino. This may make it difficult to cancel the award, even if members accept that a change is needed.
A council member told the outlet that FIFA could redesign the award to honor people who promote social harmony and responsibility in football. Under that scheme, politicians would not be eligible for the award. FIFA introduced the award in November 2025 to honor people who have taken “exceptional and extraordinary action for peace”. The organization presented Trump with a gold trophy, a medal and a certificate at the men’s World Cup draw in Washington last December.
The process behind Trump’s selection was never made public, leading to concerns about the award. FIFA’s statutes also prohibit political or government interference in football, a rule that led to criticism of the decision. If FIFA holds the award the Social Responsibility Committee is expected to set clear rules. It will also review the nomination and selection process for future winners.
