JMSN’s song “Love Me” provides the soundtrack as flags and images of Donald Trump fill the screen. The President talks about fighting communism, while the ad also highlights support for tax cuts and “law and order” policing. The video then brings up Dana White, whose 2024 Republican National Convention speech praised Trump as “the toughest, most resilient person” he had met (via The Daily Beast).
In the closing seconds comes the unusual part: “Paid for by the US government.” The disclaimer raised questions because the ad closely resembles a partisan political message. Government advertising may cover areas such as public health or military recruitment but it must be non-partisan.
X was immediately criticized. MeidasTouch called it “grotesque fascist propaganda”, while Democratic commentator Isaiah Martin argued that taxpayers were funding the message. Democratic Texas House candidate Sarah McGee went further, calling the spot “fascist propaganda, period” and accused government officials of betraying America. “I don’t know what’s going through the minds of members of our other two branches of government, but they are actively betraying our country,” he wrote.
The ad also comes as Trump’s White House pushes another highly Trump-centric media project. Earlier this week, the administration launched a 24/7 stream through the White House YouTube channel called “Trump TV.” The stream includes speeches and other highlights from the administration, but only a few hundred viewers are watching.
That viewership led to a strangely ridiculous comparison. The Daily Beast reported that the black screen audio played by a Lasko box fan on Speed 3 attracted more viewers than the Trump stream.
