Gavin Newsom remembers Donald Trump’s old phone call
During a recent conversation, the former San Francisco mayor revealed the last time he spoke to POTUS on the phone.
“It was about 10:30 my time, 1:30 their time,” Gavin Newsom revealed during the March 3 episode. Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “And he says: ‘Hey, Gav, Gav, what do you think about Newscomm?’ For me it is his nickname. I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ He says, ‘It’s pretty original, isn’t it?'” prompting him to reply, ‘Actually, it’s not.’ There was a bully in the eighth grade who did that when I was a kid.”
Donald Trump quickly changed the subject and told Newsom that “MAGA is great.” He then bizarrely questioned the veteran Democrat about the number of MAGA hats sold last week, claiming the number was 211.
Newsom responded in a surprised tone, saying, “These are conversations with Trump. You can’t make things like this up.” He further revealed that “about 12 hours later, he said he had read me the Riot Act and moved forward with federalization of the Guard.”
Gavin Newsom then had another phone call with the businessman-turned-politician after his inauguration speech. During the speech, Newsom’s youngest son inadvertently tripped on the stage and fell asleep.
“Trump called me the next day and said, ‘I saw that.’ I said, ‘Thank you, Mr. President,'” the California governor said. “I thought it would be a positive conversation. And, he talks about my wife, says some interesting things about her.”
According to Newsom, Donald Trump said, “Melania is upset.” “‘You said some very harsh things about me.'” When he tried to explain his address, the president responded, “‘Oh, I understand, oh, we’re all good.'” According to Newsom, it sounded like “he was hurt, he was very sad.”
