Monica McNutt explains how she wasn’t racist towards Taylor Swift at Knicks game

On June 10, the Knicks radio analyst and ESPN personality was caught on a hot mic reacting to Swift’s appearance at Madison Square Garden during Game 4 of the NBA Finals. He asked, “Is that Taylor Swift? She’s not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl.”

Swifties immediately came to the pop singer’s defense. one of many fans wrote“Taylor lives in NYC and is a Knicks fan. Black people are clueless about everything and only hate Taylor Swift because she’s white. Racist a** creatures.”

On the June 12 broadcast of The Breakfast Club, McNutt defended himself, saying, “One, Hot Mike, first of all, right? Second, I literally did a piece on the Knicks celebrity row. After the game, Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor are hugging me. Like, I know celebrities who are constantly there. Maybe I misjudged his loyalty, But I hadn’t seen him the whole season.

She said she was not racist. “Even if you call race peace of mind, I’m just observing what’s happening. Immediately, people said, ‘Oh, you’re racist.’ No, I’m kind of stating the facts. But we have to live with that fact, and it makes everyone else uncomfortable.”

Cohost Lauren LaRosa argued that although McNutt’s critics did not mention race, it was still an underlying factor. McNutt agreed, saying, “It’s implied. Because if I had been in a different body, none of this would have happened.” Fellow co-hosts also defended her, with Jess Hilarious saying, “If it was a black woman, this wouldn’t even be a story. There was no way for them to make that Taylor Swift moment a black or white thing.”

In a video shared by tmzMcNutt also issued an apology. He said, “I said it wrong. I didn’t know.” And added, “I mean, I didn’t know. I apologize if I’m wrong. And obviously I’m wrong, and that’s OK.” The Knicks’ next game, Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals, is scheduled for June 13, 2026, against the Spurs in San Antonio.
