The amphitheater is located on the University of California, Santa Cruz campus, in the city where he grew up.
Oliver Tree’s iconic characters shaped his public life as much as his music. He performed in bowl cuts and oversized clothes, rode scooters through his videos, and staged elaborate retirements that blurred the line between artist and bit. Giving each person their own casket extends that logic into the service itself.
Tree released “Ugly Is Beautiful” in 2020 and toured internationally in the years that followed. He played Coachella in April and was on a world tour when he died. On June 14, two helicopters collided in Rio de Janeiro, killing all six on board. His father, Jesse Nickel, confirmed the death, saying a producer who worked with him in Brazil broke the news.
Tree, whose full name was Oliver Tree Nickels, had performed in Buenos Aires 10 days earlier. His team launched the Dr. Oliver Tree Extremely Epic Art Grant for Baby Genius after his death, and the family asks that donations go to the foundation.
