Patti LuPone criticizes Turkey after LGBTQ cruise ban report
LuPone candidly shares her reaction instagram post After learning that the Atlantis “Athens to Venice” sailing will no longer stop in Turkey. The cruise, operated by Atlantis Events aboard Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady, had planned to visit Kusadasi and Istanbul before organizers were forced to reroute the trip.
“I’m shocked,” LuPone wrote on Instagram. “The Atlantis cruise I’m performing on next week has been banned from entering Turkey. A ship – a luxurious ship – filled with gay men. And I was denied entry into Turkey simply because of who’s on the ship.” She added, “I’m angry, but I’m sailing… I’m ready to perform for these wonderful people on this Atlantis cruise who deserve so much better.”
according to cnn, Turkish authorities canceled the scheduled stop after determining that the chartered trip was associated with groups “known for behavior inconsistent with the framework of our society and our moral values.” The revised itinerary will now include stops in Cairo, Egypt and the Greek island of Crete.
The decision stunned Atlantis Events, which has been hosting LGBTQ+ holidays for more than three decades. Company president and CEO Rich Campbell told CNN, “It’s pretty surprising, to be honest. I mean, and the reasoning behind it is that it’s a gay group.” He said it was the first time in the company’s 36-year history that it “has been actively told we can’t have a place here because of who we are.”
Campbell also rejected suggestions that Cruz had a political agenda. According to CNN, he said, “This is not a political organization. We’re not there for anything other than spending money, having a good time, doing tourism and being incredibly respectful to every culture we visit.”
