He described Swift as an artist who has spent years creating worlds through both music and filmmaking. The new honor brought Swift’s VMA wins to 31, making her the most awarded artist in the ceremony’s history and breaking her previous tie with Beyoncé.

During her acceptance speech, Swift reflected on how her relationship with music videos has evolved. She said she started making and acting in music videos about 20 years ago and has worked on about 60 videos since then. He said that he has written and directed 18 of those projects himself. Swift also credited her fans for making the creative process rewarding.

The pop star has previously directed videos including “The Man,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero,” and “Fortnite.” His work in “All Too Well: The Short Film” earned him multiple VMAs, including Video of the Year and Best Direction.

A source told page six Swift wanted to work with MTV to mark the release of “Patient Zero,” which arrived Friday along with three additional tracks from “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.” “Taylor really wanted to do something with MTV to celebrate the release of ‘Patient Zero,'” the source said. “They created this award just for him.
